I’m a writer and historical researcher in Chicago, originally from Maryland. My writing about photography, literature, music, history, food, and other subjects has appeared in publications including Rolling Stone, The Times Literary Supplement, The Baffler, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Lapham's Quarterly, Eater, The Brooklyn Rail, The Paris Review Daily, The Quietus, and The Baltimore Beat. My academic work centers on the history of photography, policing, and social movements in the United States.

As an independent researcher, historical consultant, and editor, I’ve contributed to radio programs, articles, academic monographs, and photographic exhibitions, including Unscripted Moments: The Life and Photography of Joseph Kohl at the Maryland Center for History and Culture. With the filmmaker Theo Anthony, I worked on the award-winning, PBS-syndicated documentary RAT FILM (trailer), which The New Yorker called one of “62 Films That Shaped the Art of Documentary Filmmaking” and Paste Magazine called one of the “30 Best Documentaries of the 2010s.”
